The Engine Is a River

A modern turbofan is not a fire tube that pushes an aircraft forward. It is a carefully balanced machine that splits one intake flow into two coupled rivers: a large, cooler bypass stream that produces much of the propulsive effect, and a smaller core stream that supplies the work needed to keep the fan and compressors turning.
